Excellent Reference!

I am an herbalist by trade but as many of you may know, herbs work differently on dogs and cats then they do on humans. You cannot apply the same treatments and dosages to animals.

This book is helpful in 2 ways. First it contains a list of several ailments at the start with proposed treatments - but that section is so so. If you are looking for in-depth discussion of each ailment, this is not it. This book covers each ailment briefly, along with suggested therapies and their success rates/effects on the animal but it doesn't really explain the ailment that much since it covers so many of them. The best part of this book is part 2 where it covers many different herbs and supplements and the effects it has on animals and the proper dosages.

I would venture to say that this book is not for beginners. If you do not know much about Herbalism or herbs and supplements in general, this book will seem bad to you. It does not go into the detail about what each herb or supplement does - it assumes you already know that. There are plenty of books out there that cover that as well and it would be pointless for this book to cover it too. This book takes that knowledge and bridges it to the animal world. If you already have a knowledge of Herbalism, this book will tell you what you need to know about how it applies to animals. I have 7 dogs at home, and everyday there is some scrape or allergy or weird thing happening and this book never leaves my side. It has saved me hundreds on vet bills since I normally stock a lot of herbs at home anyway.

One thing - this book has a lot of great info for treatments of all types, but it is not a substitute for emergency care. If your animal has seriously injured itself and is bleeding etc - take him to the emergency room!
